SIOUX CITY, IA—The Musketeers announced three new hires on Friday to fill out the coaching and scouting staff for the upcoming season. Andy Johnson, Taylor Ward, and Nick Brusa will be joining the organization and filling out various roles for the 2017-18 season.
Director of Scouting
The Musketeers have named Andy Johnson as the Director of Scouting for the Sioux City Musketeers. Andy comes to the Musketeers after working the three seasons as a scout for the Waterloo Black Hawks and one with the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the USHL. During the last two seasons Andy worked as an Area Scout for NHL Central Scouting. Andy will oversee the Phase I and II drafts working hand in hand with General Manager Mark LeRose, and will direct the regional scouts and scouting schedules.
“Andy’s experience of evaluating talent, organizing draft lists and ability to scout to our criteria were the most attractive pieces of his hire. He loves the rink, player evaluations and is very well connected. He is a very driven, loyal and hard-working person. We are excited to add him and his abilities to our staff” Said Head Coach Luke Strand.
Johnson added “I’m extremely honored that Sioux City has given me an opportunity to lead its scouting department going forward. I’d like to thank Luke Strand, Mark LeRose and the Musketeers ownership for having faith in my ability to uphold the high standard for talent that has already been set in Sioux City. I’ve been fortunate to learn from incredible mentors P.K. O’Handley and Shane Fukushima in Waterloo, Dan Marr and Greg Rajanen from NHL Central Scouting. Sioux City is a first-class organization from the top down and I look forward to getting on the road immediately to find players that fit Coach Strand’s vision.”
Taylor Ward will join Luke Strand’s staff as an Assistant Coach. The native of Pittsburgh, PA is a graduate of UW-Eau Claire where he won a National Championship as a player in 2012-13. Taylor joins the staff after last working for the Coulee Region Chill of the NAHL.
Strand said “Taylor and I have known each other for his entire lifetime. His desire to coach, teach and mentor young men is a great asset of his. We have spent years on the ice together where I have observed his growth as a person and a coach. He will bring his energy and passion to the rink everyday to make us a better team.”
A former colleague of Head Coach Strand, Ward is excited to get to work with the Muskies “I would first like to thank the Sioux City Musketeers organization for this tremendous opportunity. I am extremely excited to add to the team’s storied success and history. Luke is someone I’ve looked up to and learned from for many years and to be able to work with him full time is a tremendous honor which I will not take lightly. This is the top developmental league in the US and I am looking forward to assisting in the development of the these young men both on and off the ice.”

Nick Brusa has been named Director of Hockey Operations and Assistant Coach of the Musketeers. Nick, a native of Chicago IL, spent the last part of his playing career with the Brampton Capitals of the Quebec Junior Hockey League and the Queen City Steam of the NA3HL. He has spent the last two years coaching various organizations in the Chicago area and is ready to make an impact in Sioux City, “I would like to thank Luke and the Sioux City management. I am grateful for the opportunity to be involved with the Sioux City Musketeers organization. I couldn’t be more excited to work for an organization with a winning culture like Sioux City. I am eager to learn and to help the team as much as I can.”
“Nick will make a difference in the player’s lives both on and off the ice. Nick is a rink rat that l feel has the desire and ability to climb the ladder in hockey. His drive and enthusiasm for the game is contagious” said Head Coach Luke Strand.
