(Sioux City, IA) - Sioux City Musketeers associate head coach Mark Abalan has been named the association director of hockey operations at Northstar Christian Academy in Alexandria, Minnesota.
Northstar is a non-public high school serving grades 9-12 and fields hockey programs at the 16U and 18U levels. Abalan will coach the U16 squad.
“My family and I are excited to be joining Northstar Christian Academy,” Abalan said. “In a short time as a program, Northstar has proved to be a special place with exceptional people. I am eager to learn from Rick and Shannon Randazzo, the staff and all the players. This is a great fit for me to grow professionally and for my young family to grow our faith in Jesus Christ."
Abalan spent eight seasons over three different stints behind the Musketeers bench. He was a head coach in the USHL for a season, guiding the Chicago Steel and has coached prep hockey in Minnesota at Shattuck-St. Mary’s, where he served as both head and assistant coach.
Abalan won a gold medal as an assistant coach with Team USA’s U19 squad at the World Junior A Challenge in 2019 before earning a bronze medal in the same role a year later.
“I would like to give a huge thank you to the Sioux City Musketeers organization, for treating me so well over the past ten years,” Abalan continued, “I especially want to thank the ownership, Lloyd Ney, Matt and Val Gornet for your extreme generosity and friendship. Thank you to Luke Strand for giving me this opportunity three years ago. You are a friend and a brother and I'll miss getting after it with you! It has truly been a special three years. You guys are like family to me and moving on is never easy but sometimes the hard road is the right road. I’ve had a great 8 seasons with the Musketeers and will always consider the Siouxland a home. Thank you to all my many friends and the great people of Sioux City.”
