Sampo Ranta's OT goal lifts the Musketeers past Fargo in the season opener

FARGO, ND—The Musketeers won game one of the 2017-18 season in dramatic fashion beating the Fargo Force in overtime by a final score of 3-2.  Hayden Rowan and Matt De St. Phalle tallied their first USHL goals and Sampo Ranta continued to impress with two points of his own including the game winning goal.

The 1st period was a fairly even affair with both teams going scoreless.  Early in the period it looked as though the Muskteers were still getting their feet under them after a long bus ride from Sioux City.  By the end of the period the team was buzzing, almost burying a few high quality chances in tight but Fargo goaltender Ryan Bischel kept it scoreless. As the game moved along the Musketeers continued to get stronger.

That trend continued into the 2nd period when the Musketeers would finally break the scoreless tie. After winning the puck in the defensive zone, Matt Miller flew down the right side before hitting a trailing Hayden Rowan who had a wide open shot and fired a wrister past Bischel to put the Musketeers up 1-0.  Just a few minutes after the goal, Solag Bakich would get called for spearing on a faceoff in the defensive zone and was given a 5 minute major and a game ejection.  Fargo would be on the powerplay for the remainder of the period but a solid penalty kill and a few key saves from Matt Jurusik kept the Force off the board.

The 3rd period was a battle with both teams finding the net in the final frame.  Matthew De St. Phalle scored his first USHL goal after a beautiful cross ice feed from Sampo Ranta to give the Musketeers a 2 goal lead.  Fargo would answer right back when Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup snuck one past goaltender Matt Jurusik for Fargo’s first goal of the game cutting the deficit to one.  Fargo would ride the momentum and eventually tie the game up on a point shot from defenseman Brian Hurley, and that’s how the third would end.

Early in OT Cole Koepke was called for hook that gave Fargo a crucial powerplay, but they were unable to capitalize.  Schmidt-Svejstrup was called for goaltender intereference with just under a minute left in the Musketeer penalty.  Right as the Musketeer penalty was expiring, Matt Fawcett found a wide open Sampo Ranta in front of the net and he wasn’t going to miss.  Silky Smooth Sampo sent the Musketeers home happy with a 3-2 overtime win.
